Nouri Al Maliki is the Secretary General of the Islamic Dawa Party. Al Maliki also served as the Prime Minister of Iraq from 2006 to 2014, and thereafter as the Vice President of Iraq from 2014 to 2015 and 2016 to 2018. According to the BBC, Maliki’s objective was to position himself as a strong and unifying leader in post-Saddam Iraq. However, since 2010, Maliki has been  accused of abandoning a strategy that would prove beneficial for Iraq’s interests, in favor of concentrating power among his mostly Shia allies. He has also become more closely allied with Iran over issues including the conflict in Syria. Those who have been obstacles to his – thus, Iran’s agenda -, have been hunted down and killed by militia groups. A list including 600 names was compiled by the Jerusalem Post including all the cases of Iraqi citizens who have been assassinated by Maliki’s gunmen. The list includes academics, pilots, soldiers, physicians, chemists, and tribal leaders.
