Reham Yacoub was a nutritionist and social media influencer. Yacoub was known for organizing women’s marches, and she had previously received threats against her life when she participated in training courses in Basra in 2017 and 2018. She was killed and three other women were wounded in the city of Basra, when gunmen linked to the Badr Organization opened fire on their car on August 19, 2019.

Yacoub had started her own online fitness training classes. At the same time, she organized women’s marches advocating for change in Iraq despite receiving death threats. During her fitness classes, she encouraged women to study and educate themselves. She used to say that “it is natural for women to work and to be educated,”  presenting a threat to and becoming a target of the corrupted government and the Iranian-backed militias. According to her family, Yacoub was murdered by the Iranian-backed Badr Organization with aims at eliminating a female voice widely recognized and admired by the Iraqi people.
