Amin Sherri is a Lebanese businessman, supporter, financier, and member of the political wing of Hezbollah. Sherri started his career in the trade and shoe industry, in which he focused on for many years. However, in the face of U.S. and other international sanctions, Hezbollah sought support from trusted wealthy individuals, such as Sherri, who were not exactly affiliated to the party. The Lebanese businessman helped Hezbollah secure resources for the party and circumvent economic sanctions as well as established offices in the airport and Beirut port to facilitate the smuggling of goods and weapons from Iran to Hezbollah. Thereafter, using his influence as a member of Parliament and member of the most powerful group in Lebanon, , Sherri built broad public relations with financial bodies in Lebanon, and then became a financial interface and interlocutor for the group. Sherri became a Lebanese Parliament member in 2005 and 2018, a Beirut Municipal member in 2005, and a candidate for the incoming Parliamentary election in May of 2022.
The most essential mission entrusted to Sherri is to build relations with major bank owners and officials. The primary purpose of this was to secure the transfer of funds without compliance and traceability processes. However, in 2016, the U.S. Department of the Treasury began to warn Lebanese banks by adding them to the sanctions list if they made businesses with Hezbollah and other individuals or companies directly linking or representing the group. As a result, banks began to put pressure on Sherri’s accounts as well as Hezbollah accounts. According to a press release of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Amin Sherri “threatened Lebanese bank officials and their family members after the bank froze the accounts of U.S.-designated Hezbollah member, whom OFAC designated as an SDGT for assisting in, sponsoring, or providing financial, material, or technological support for, or financial or other services to or in support of, Hezbollah.”
