With the outbreak of the Syrian Revolution, Yunis was the chief of the 555th Brigade of the Fourth Division at the rank of Staff Brigadier. He is directly responsible for crimes and deliberate violations as violent methods of repression against peaceful demonstrators. At the beginning of the peaceful demonstrations in 2011, Maher al-Assad, Assad’s brother, with whom he has a close relationship with, assigned him the mission of suppressing demonstrators in the governorate of Rif Dimashq. Under Yunis’ supervision, his forces committed heinous crimes in cities and towns of Rif Dimashq and Daraa provinces. It is reported that in an attack in Nawa, a town in Daraa, Yunis gave orders to shoot peaceful demonstrators and arbitrarily arrest innocent people in the city. In April 2022, Bashar Al-Assad renewed his appointment as Chief of the Security and Military Committee in the eastern region.
